In May of 2000, The Economist described Africa as “The Hopeless Continent.” In December of 2011, The Economist in a reassessment, described quite the opposite— “Africa Rising.” Since then, the debate whether Africa is rising has raged on with some arguing that the growing middle class across Africa hardly warrants the claim that Africa is rising.
