BRIEF REMARKS: YOUTH & DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA: WHO IS DRIVING PEACEFUL POLITICAL CHANGE IN AFRICA?

Dr. Sommers argues that the status-quo isn’t working for young people across Africa, a theme he so eloquently explores in his recent book, “The Outcast Majority: War, Development, and Youth in Africa.” He explains the gap between African youth and their governments. While he acknowledges that this gap is hugely dysfunctional, he argues it also presents opportunities for hope and change.

BRIEF REMARKS: CURRENT STATE OF SECURITY & STABILITY IN AFRICA

What is the current state of security and stability in Africa?

BRIEF REMARKS: THE FUTURE OF SECURITY AND STABILITY IN AFRICA

What is the future of security and stability in Africa?

According to John Campbell, stability and security trends in Africa are mixed, with a few countries, including South Africa, Botswana, Senegal, and Ethiopia, trending towards openness. Others, like Somalia, Burkina Faso, and the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are going the opposite direction. There are a few in the middle, like Nigeria and Kenya, lingering in-between.

BRIEF REMARKS: THE ROLE OF GOVERNMENTS IN YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

What role do governments play in youth development across Africa?

Young people across Africa are on the move in spite of the actions of governments and their donor supporters. For the majority, survival is mostly outside the framework of government and the formal economic sectors even though governments and donor efforts often focus on the opposite—formal sectors, which contrasts with the reality youth face. A significant number of post-war youth in Africa find themselves in cities, relying on informal economies for their livelihood.

BRIEF REMARKS: TRADE AND MACROECONOMICS IN AFRICA

What explains the extremely fragile and unstable growth in Africa, despite improvements in the macroeconomic and business environment?

Dr. Oulatta argues that although structural, political, and security concerns remain predominant, overwhelming, and empirical evidence supports the view that Sub-Saharan African countries are improving today.
